Journal of Swiss Archaeology and Art History

The Journal of Swiss Archaeology and Art History (ZAK) has been in publication since 1939, as the successor to the ‘Anzeiger für Schweizerische Altertumskunde’ (Swiss archaeological gazette) founded in 1868. Issues are published quarterly. The lavishly illustrated magazine publishes significant specialist articles on the archaeology of Switzerland and the history of Swiss art and culture. Attention is also given to art history pieces of a general nature and articles on new methods in technologies relating to art and restoration. Separate issues covering specific subject areas alternate with this sort of mixed content. There is regular discussion of new releases from the relevant literature. ZAK is one of the leading professional journals in its field.

Languages

In addition to the predominantly German-language articles, contributions are also published in French, Italian and occasionally English, in each case with summaries provided in each of the other languages. The fact that articles are published in multiple languages is one of the reasons for ZAK’s global popularity.

Open Access

After a waiting period of two years, ZAK can be freely accessed on the ETH Library’s platform for digitised Swiss journals (e-periodica.ch), and can be read online or downloaded as a PDF:

e-periodica.ch

The holdings of e-periodica can also be searched via the knowledge portal of the ETH Library and Swisscovery.

Assessment (peer review)

The editorial team will carry out an initial evaluation of each manuscript submitted, based on the topicality, interest and significance of the subject matter, use of scientific method, clarity of presentation (including linguistic quality) and relevance of the material for the journal’s readership. Articles considered suitable will be reviewed by members of the journal’s editorial board and/or other recognised specialists, and thus undergo a peer review process. These people are selected by the editorial team on the basis of their expertise and reputation in their field, taking care to ensure that authors and reviewers are not part of the same institution.
