The Power of Cartoons

Cartoons have the ability to transcend culture, language and time barriers while evoking a range of emotions and delivering impactful messages. Some of them capture the spirit of the time so well that they become important testimonies of today for the future. 

The Geneva-based Patrick Chappatte is a pioneer of graphic journalism and one of the worldwide best-known political cartoonists. His drawings are sharp – sometimes they even reach the pain threshold. In a discussion hosted by the renowned presenter Monika Schärer, Chappatte will talk about the power and powerlessness of a cartoonist, about the reactions and dangers of his profession and his passionate advocating for freedom of expression and press. 

The event takes place in english.

Patrick Chappatte

Patrick Chappatte | © Nathan Hausermann
Cartoonist and a pioneer of graphic journalism. He was for many years the in-house cartoonist for the New Work Times, and he works among others for The Boston Globe, Der Spiegel, Le Temps and NZZ am Sonntag. He is a passionate advocate for freedom of expression in a spirit of dialogue, he organises community projects all over the world and leads a foundation promoting cartooning as a tool for democracy.

Monika Schärer

Monika Schärer
A freelance cultural mediator, producer and presenter. She has worked for Swiss radio and television for over 30 years in front of and behind the cameras as culture, science and travel presenter.

She has worked for Swiss radio and television for over 30 years in front of and behind the cameras for programmes on culture, science and travel. She is on the board of Fantoche, the International Animation Film Festival, as well of Cuisine sans frontiers, a non-profit organisation that foster community spirit.
